Top 4 Carpet Stains and How to Remove Them

The day will come when you or someone else accidentally spills coffee or wine on your carpet. It’s inevitable, but not something to stress over. We’re here to give you the rundown on how you can effectively remove some of the most common carpet stains.

Kool-Aid

Coloured beverages can create a horrible stain on a lot of carpet types, but they can be removed from even the whitest of fibres. How? Blot, never rub, the stain with a dry towel. Rubbing will push the stain further into the fibres, making it harder to remove. Using a mixture of one-quarter cup white vinegar, one tablespoon of dish soap and water, fill a spray bottle and spray the stained area liberally. Let the solution soak for five to ten minutes before blotting it clean. Use a dry towel and work until the stain is gone.

Pet Stains

It’s common for pet owners to have to clean up after their furry friends, even if they’re trained. Accidents happen, and when they do, it’s important to know how to deal with them before your entire house smells. But before you can clean up any stains, you’ll have to clean up the initial accident. Using gloves, dispose of the mess. If your pet urinated on the carpet, then use the blotting method and dry up as much as you can.

Is there a stain or odour? In a spray bottle, mix any stain-fighting laundry detergent with water and spray the area. Let the solution sit for several minutes before blotting, rinsing the area with water and repeating if necessary. This technique also works with water and white vinegar.

Coffee

If not treated properly, coffee stains can leave your carpet looking much older than it actually is. If you have pets, the stain may be mistaken as a poorly cleaned pet accident. To effectively get rid of coffee stains in your carpet, dry the spot with a towel using blotting movements. Be wary of spreading the stain if it’s a big spill. Using a spray bottle mixture of vinegar, water and a non-bleach detergent, spray the stain, letting it soak in for a few minutes before rinsing it with warm water and repeating.

Ink

Ink stains can be one of the hardest to get rid of in carpeting and other fabrics. However, if you act quickly and have the necessary tools on hand, you can remove the stain without leaving a trace. To begin, dampen a towel with the highest percentage of isopropyl alcohol you own. Dab at the ink stain, careful not to scrub it, as the stain will spread. Let the alcohol soap into the carpet for a few minutes before vacuuming up the moisture with a liquid-friendly vacuum. This may need to be done more than once. Once the stain is gone, rinse the area with warm water and blot dry.
