Signs That Your Carpet Has Mold

Mold thrives in dark, damp places. That is why it can develop so easily in your carpet. Once you discover mold, it must be dealt with swiftly, or it will multiply exponentially. Because mold can grow under carpets, it can be difficult to tell if you have it. Here are some signs to look out for when inspecting your carpets for mold:

Dampness

If carpets have been exposed to water for a day or longer, mold can develop easily. You might have a leak if you notice damp spots on your carpet. To prevent mold, you should clean and dry any wet spots on your carpet as soon as you see it. The carpeting in the basement is prone to developing mold because of the increased chance of leaks and less natural light in that level. It does not take much water for mold to grow. Some water from a spilled cup is more than enough, which is why it is so important to clean up standing water quickly.

Musty odor

It is hard to detect the distinct smells of our home since we spend so much time there. Mold does give off a musky odor though, so if a guest comments on it take note and check your carpet.

Ageing carpet

Homeowners may think an odor from their carpet is normal if it is older, but it is actually a sign it should be changed. Older carpet is more prone to mold than new carpet. Consider changing yours even if you have not had any incidents as it could only be a matter of time before it starts to form mold.

Discoloration

When mold is in its later stages, it can change the color of your carpet. You might notice green or black spots in affected areas. Since mold usually develops on the underpadding first, that could get discolored before the visible layer does. That is why it is important to check under your carpet.

Allergies

Mold causes several respiratory problems in people including allergies, bronchitis, asthma, and difficulty breathing. Not only should you consult your doctor if you experience any of these ailments, but you should also check your carpets. No everyone will have a reaction to mold, though. The absence of these issues does not mean your carpets do not have mold and you should look out for it regardless.

Testing kits

The most accurate way to check for mold is by using a testing kit. It works by testing the airflow of your carpet. Mold spores will land on the testing kit if there are any on your carpet. You can find mold testing kits at most hardware stores.

Removing mold

If you do discover mold in your carpets, you should take action immediately. Mold is toxic so be sure to use a protective mask, gloves, and goggles. There are several household cleaners you can use to get rid of mould like water with dishwashing detergent or water with bleach.

You will need to spray the solution on the affected area and allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Then, use a wet vacuum to remove excess water. That step should be done thoroughly because if any water remains, mold can continue to grow. Open a window, use a fan, and a dehumidifier to remove as much moisture from the room as possible.

Mold will continue to grow if it is not exterminated completely. Call the professionals at Hygieia Cleaning and Sanitation if your mold problem persists.
